Rightmove and banks ‘hit by IT outage’

Rightmove was reported to be hit by an IT problem, which has also affected several major banks.

The portal was among the list of websites and apps to be disrupted by a Cloud outage yesterday morning, The Sun and The Independent reported.

Google confirmed there was a problem with the power source at its Europe-West2 centre in London that serves many countries in Europe as well as Britain.

The Cloud facility allows companies to store their data at relatively cheap prices.

Technical issues

A Rightmove spokesperson said: “Earlier today, technical issues affecting Google Cloud Platform across Europe impacted some of our logged-in services.

“These issues have now been resolved and all services are operating as normal. We thank our customers for their patience while we worked closely with our provider to minimise the impact.”

Both OnTheMarket and Zoopla said they were not affected.

Property deals

Among the banks affected were Lloyds, Halifax, Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC and Revolut.

It was unclear whether any property deals involving these banks were affected by the issue.

In an update, Google said most services were operating normally by mid-afternoon yesterday.

Last year, many property transactions were interrupted by IT issues which hit several major banks.

Security issue

On a Friday, which is payday for millions of people and when many property deals are processed, Lloyds and Halifax banking apps went down.

There were also problems at TSB, Bank of Scotland, Nationwide and First Direct, affecting online and mobile services, and preventing people from making payments or transferring funds

Two years ago, property deals in Scotland were hit by a cyber security issue at the country’s insolvency service.

Any transaction requiring a search via the Register of Insolvencies was affected by the IT failure that lasted four working days, throwing many property deals into doubt.
